National Kidney Foundation Superhero Themed Dance Marathon

Mommy Jane had brought Little Angels to Sunway Pyramid last Sunday to become a superhero and save lives. We came together at The National Kidney Foundation ("NKF") of Malaysia Superhero Dance to celebrate the superheroes who had pledged their organs for donations.
Held in conjunction with World Diabetes Day, there are hundreds of participants who showed up in their best Superhero costumes and danced in support of diabetes awareness and organ donation. Led by Celebrity Fitness Malaysia instructors, the dance include Zumba and Sh'Bam.
The dance also advocated for early detection through screening and keeping up a healthy and active lifestyle. As all of us knew that Diabetes is one of the leading causes of chronic kidney disease, the advanced stage of which is irreversible.
Dr Khoo Chow Huat, the Deputy Managing Director of Sunway Group Healthcare Services and Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Medical Centre said that according to the 2015 National Health and Morbidity survey, an estimated 17.5% of Malaysians have diabetes. However, it has been proven that adopting healthier lifestyles can prevent or delay most type 2 diabetes cases, especially when paired with regular health screenings. Long term health monitoring is needed to ensure that we can track the risk factors of diabetes and adjust our lifestyles to prevent the disease in its earlier phase.
Mr Chua Hong Wee, CEO of NKF Malaysia added that for many chronic disease patients, organ donation is their last chance of survival but unfortunately only 1% of Malaysians are registered organ donors, pointing to a severe shortage in light of the almost 20,000 patients on the waiting list for a kidney transplant every year. Through this dance marathon, they hope both raise awareness for the prevention of kidney disease and also provide options for end stage kidney patients for a second lease of life.
The Superhero Dance Marathon aims to raise RM15,000 which will be used in NKF's efforts to provide dialysis treatments to 1,600 patients across 28 dialysis centres in Malaysia. Other activities that took place included free health screenings and exhibitions, a children fashion show, performances and a colouring contest.
The NKF Superhero Dance Marathon had marks another collaboration effort between NKF and the Sunway Group Healthcare Services to combat kidney disease following the joint launching of an organ donation promotion unit in Sunway Pyramid. The organ donation promotion unit will be found at CP3 of Sunway Pyramid and is staffed by full-time healthcare professionals to enables shoppers to receive up-to-date information about organ donation and pledge for donation.
For more information on future NKF activities or to donate towards NKF efforts, do visit their website at www.nkf.org.my or call them at 03-79549048.
It was a great effort by NKF and Sunway Medical Centre to raise awareness on the organ donations to save more lives. Mommy Jane and Daddy had also pledged our organs for donations in the hope that more patients able to lead to normal life after the transplant. Little Angels also did their part by dressing up as Superheroes, WH as Batman, WT as Captain America and WJ as Superman to remind the public that had pledge their organ for donations, they are indeed Superheroes in our heart.
